Here is what you can do if you are caught and buried in an avalanche:
During the Avalanche (While Moving)
Your goal is to stay near the surface and create breathing space.
• Shed heavy gear: Ditch skis, poles, or snowboards, as they can act as anchors and drag you down deeper.
• "Swim" aggressively: Use a swimming motion with your arms and legs to fight the pull of the snow and stay afloat on the surface.
• Protect your airway: As the avalanche slows, position one hand over your mouth and nose to create an air pocket, and try to push the other hand toward the surface to give rescuers a clue to your location.
• Take a deep breath: Just before the snow comes to a complete stop, take and hold a deep breath to expand your chest. This gives you a bit of room to breathe once the snow solidifies around you.
After the Avalanche Stops (Buried)
Once the snow settles, it becomes an almost immovable mass, making self-extraction nearly impossible.
• Stay calm and conserve air: Panic increases oxygen consumption. Focus on slow, steady breathing to maximize the limited air in your pocket.
• Do not struggle to dig: Unless you are very near the surface (less than a foot deep), struggling wastes precious oxygen and energy. Movement also compacts the snow further around you.
• Trust your partners: Your survival depends entirely on your companions performing a fast rescue. The vast majority of live recoveries are made by partners on the scene within the first 15 minutes of burial.
• Make noise only if you hear rescuers: Snow is an excellent sound insulator. Yelling will use up valuable oxygen unless you can hear voices or activity right above you.
Prevention and Preparedness
The best way to survive an avalanche is to avoid getting caught in one.
• Get training: Take an avalanche safety course to learn how to assess risk and perform rescues.
• Carry essential gear: Always carry and know how to use an avalanche transceiver (beacon), a probe, and a shovel. Avalanche airbags are also highly recommended.
• Check conditions: Consult daily avalanche advisories from centers like Avalanche.org (USA) or Avalanche Canada before entering the backcountry.
• Travel with partners: Never go into avalanche terrain alone. Travel one at a time across risky slopes, ensuring one person is always in a safe spot to initiate a rescue if needed.
